In reality, the interconnectivity of Chicago is not far from the vision of Watch Dogs. Now they are Aiden’s primary weapon and a keystone of society. In fact, when game developers began constructing the video game in 2009, smartphones were only just emerging.

Players will see a Chicago that is heavily monitored by technology, and while some of the game still uses fantastical versions of smart systems, Watch Dogs also predicts where society is headed. However, the game eerily puts into perspective a “futuristic,” technologically connected world that looks even more similar to current society than the game designers planned. The Aiden character uses hacking, government records, and surveillance to track down the killer of his niece. (See “Case Study: Watch Dogs Hacks Our Surveillance Society” on page 85 for more on the narrative power of video games.) 16 No matter what the style, digital games are compelling entertainment and mass media because they pose challenges (mental and physical), allow us to engage in situations both realistic and fantastical, and allow us to socialize with others as we play with friends and form communities inside and outside of games. Electronic games occupy an enormous range of styles, from casual games like Tetris, Angry Birds, Bejeweled, and Fruit Ninja-described by one writer as “stupid games” that are typically “a repetitive, storyless puzzle that could be picked up, with no loss of potency, at any moment, in any situation”-to ful l- blown, Hollywoo d- like immersive adventure games like Final Fantasy. The attractions of this interactive playground validate electronic gaming’s status as one of today’s most powerful social media.
VIRTUAL CITY PLAYGROUND GAME KILLER UPGRADE
Only one upgrade can be queued at a time.To fully explore the larger media playground, we need to look beyond electronic gaming’s technical aspects and consider the human faces of gaming. The upgrade can be initiated while the truck is filling up or emptying its load, but the upgrade will only be performed when the truck is on the road. Truck upgrade details for Virtual City Playground are below:Ī truck can be upgraded when it is at the Garage or when it is on a route. Details on truck upgrades in Virtual City and Virtual City 2 are in the table below: If it is carrying liquids, it is a tanker truck and has a cylindrical body.Ī truck's color denotes its upgrade level. For example, if it is carrying solids, it normally has a box as its body.

The truck's body depends on what cargo it is carrying. The Bakery would never produce any Pies, and the truck would be endlessly waiting. The waiting for goods state can go on indefinately if, for example, a route for a truck was set up between the Bakery and the Shopping Mall, but the Bakery was recieving no Milk. Trucks are bought at the Garage by clicking on the Garage and then the truck icon, or from the trucks menu at the bottom of the screen.Ī truck can be in one of several states at any one time. The amount of money a truck makes depends on its upgrade level and the buildings it is transporting between. Trucks are the main source of income for players in all games. A truck is used for transporting goods from one production building to another, or from the last production building in a chain to a Shopping Mall. They appear in all versions of the game, and are one of the three vehicle types, alongside Dump Trucks and Buses. Trucks are the most important vehicle used in Virtual City.
